ADDRESS OF KEHINDE ABIOLA, FBMP, MNIM, CHAIRMAN OF
GOVERNING COUNCIL, LIVING SPRING COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION DURING
THE GENERAL MEETING OF ANCOPSS, OSUN STATE CHAPTER HELD AT ODUDUWA COLLEGE, ILE
IFE ON JULY 21, 2010
The
Chairman of Osun State chapter of ANCOPSS, Mr. A. O. Akinlusi and members of
his executive committee, principals of secondary schools in Osun State, members
of the Governing Council and management of Living Spring College of Technology
and Innovation (LISCOTECH), Osogbo, Other dignitaries present, ladies and
gentlemen. On behalf of the Governing
Council and management of LISCOTECH, I hereby express our profound gratitude to
the Chairman and members of ANCOPSS, Osun State for granting us the opportunity
to make presentation to this very important forum. Our mission is to provide an all embracing
polytechnic education contributing meaningfully to solving unemployment and
underemployment problems, enduringly.
Ladies
and gentlemen, you will agree with me that a major cause of the mass
unemployment problem is our educational system that keep churning out white
collar job seekers for the oversaturated labour market. In one of my articles on how to solve
unemployment problem in Nigeria, published in The Punch of September 3, 2008, I referred to a statement of the
Honourable Minister for Youth Development, Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi in
order to describe the unemployment situation in Nigeria, that “80% of Nigerian
youths are unemployed, 50% of those on paid jobs are underemployed and that 90%
of tertiary institutions graduates don’t get paid jobs”. The high unemployment rate in turn
contributes to our poverty level as over 75% Nigerian’s over 165 million
population live below the poverty line, per capita is less than 300 USD and
more than 60% of Nigerians living below the poverty line are in the category of
the poorest of the poors. I am familiar
with the unemployment and poverty situation in the process of performing my duties
as the National Executive Director, Nigeria Opportunities Industrialisation
Centres. One major way to solve the
problem of mass unemployment nay high poverty levels is to provide higher
education that will produce job makers, that is, graduates that can employ
themselves and possibly employ others.
This is what Living Spring College of Technology and Innovation sets out
to do. We have deliberate plan to ensure
that all graduates of the school are gainfully employed at the end of course
mainly through our Self Employment Scheme.
Starter packs for graduates to commence their businesses will be
provided and their businesses followed up to stabilize. We also have Job Placement Scheme in
conjunction with our “Employers’ Forum”.
We are here to seek your support as the Chief Executive Officers of
secondary schools, for the benefit of all.
